Haydn Morris
Haydn is a landscape painter who works at his studio in Tirril, near Penrith, close to Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. His favourite subjects include the Cumbrian Fells and Scottish Islands. Working mainly in oil and watercolour, occasionally using acrylics and pastels. For Haydn, atmosphere is more important than too much detail. Leaving something to your imagination may stimulate you to engage with the work more closely and perhaps enjoy it more too.
Another reason for his impressionist approach is that he wants to create an interesting composition in an abstract sense – through an appealing arrangement of colours, shapes, lines, tones and textures. This leads him to move things around a little and perhaps change or exaggerate the colours – but he always aims to express the atmosphere and sense of place which was experienced at the time.

Drifting Snow - Askham Fell Watercolour 30x40cm £140
I often go over Askham Fell, in all weathers. It can be really dramatic in the winter and this time it was a real blizzard – even the fell ponies were nowhere to be seen. Iona - Towards Staffa, Breezy Oil on canvas 50x60cm £420
I love painting the sea. The Scottish Islands, with their rocky coastline and wild weather are full of interest. Iona, though a very small island, has a fantastic coast, and islands nearby add interest. Summer sunshine reflecting off the white sand on the sea bed can make the water look green. |
Eden Valley, Spring Sunshine Oil on board 25x30cm £186
The edge of the fell, one of my favourite themes, is a place where nature is reclaiming farm land - rickety fences and buildings make interesting subjects. This track leading up to the broken gate and wall intrigued me. Lanty's Tarn Oil on canvas 60x60cm £480
Snow brings out patterns in the landscape, and here, near Patterdale, the rare transformation was magical. |
Winter in the Woods, Loughrigg, pastel, 26x36cm, £250
Winter wonderland. I loved the rocks hiding among the trees. Haydn welcomes visitors to his studio gallery. Please call 01768 865072 to book an appointment.
