An Interview With Julie Inkersole

It is a little nippy out there today but sitting in front of this lovely open log fire is giving me rosy cheeks and toasty feet. It is also mesmerising I could just sit here all day and watch it flicker away. Thanks for the cider Julie I'm not a big fan of Cider but I'll give it ago, and I'm sure the big bowl of crisps will help it go down pretty quick. Bottoms up.

You came to live in Cumbria in 2019 and subsequently now don't work, does this mean you have lots of time to do arty things?
I have a fair amount of free time to do arty stuff. Most of my days kick off with a mug or two of hot water then a big bowl of sugary porridge. If I plan to do something arty this is generally the time I get going. Once grabbed with an idea I can easily lose a whole day or two or three to creating something new.

I've noticed you produce 3D work as well as 2D, it must get more messy, how do you organise yourself to produce a 3D work of art?
I love working in 3D and designs tends to come into fruition in roof space where mess doesn’t matter too much. I do lots of planning with scribbles on scraps of paper and googling images so to establish the right shapes and measurements, especially if doing a wire structure. It can take a few weeks to complete a new wire sculpture or an installation with Busy Bods busy doing silly tasks.

I love the Busy Bods I just want to keep moving them around in a different place each day. I also love your 2D work, do you have the same process?
If it's too cold in the roof, I make other 2D “Inky Bits” down in the warmth of the kitchen or I go out and about sketching, then refine my scribbles at home. I tend to draw and redraw from sketches or photos until I get as close to right as I can. I generally draw initially in pencil, then replace the pencil lines with ink fine liner and colour in with ink, crayon or water colour. I’m gradually trying to get less illustrative to create looser pictures but it’s tricky to escape the safety of outlines.

Gosh I know what you mean, I've been trying not to be so illustrative and detailed with black lines for awhile now and it is hard to stop! When did you first start to paint?
In my twenties I used to go to life drawing classes which were held in a fabulous Georgian town house in Bath, they were just brilliant. Since moving to Cumbria I have been really lucky to have found a lovely life drawing group, “GoFigure”, who meet regularly to draw in a village hall near Keswick. It is amazing how everyone approaches the same subject in such different ways, it’s fascinating and a brilliant way to learn. I think, if I had to choose, this is actually my favourite type of arty thing to do.
